Simpler designs usually result in improved reliability, and lower costs. The award winning Andrew's Audio amplifier output controllers are a case in point - they're very different to conventional attenuators. When the volume is reduced they don't absorb amplifier power, as is the case with attenuators. At full volume an Andrew's Audio controller has no effect on the audio signal, and being a resistive device it has a minimal effect on sound quality at lower levels.
